Settings
What you change from Snipdeck's ⋯ menu, where it keeps its settings and data on Windows and Linux, and the settings.json keys you can edit by hand.
On this page (7 sections)
Snipdeck has no settings window yet. What you change often is in the gallery’s ⋯ menu; everything else lives in a plain JSON file, settings.json, created the first time you run the app. This page covers both, and where Snipdeck keeps its files on Windows and Linux.
The ⋯ menu
The ⋯ button at the end of the gallery toolbar holds the settings you are most likely to change. Each one takes effect at once and is saved for you.
| Menu item | What it does | Stored as |
|---|---|---|
| Floating snips in the taskbar | Gives each floating snip its own taskbar entry | floating_in_taskbar |
| Dark theme | Switches between the dark and light theme | dark_theme |
| Launch at Login | Starts Snipdeck in the tray when you log in | A startup entry, not settings.json; see below |
| Language | Picks the interface language | language |
| Upload to | Picks the image host for uploads, or adds your own | upload_service, upload_hosts |
A few more settings are saved from where you use them: the S / M / L card size in the status bar (thumb_size_index), and the target and favourite languages in the OCR + Translate popup (translate_target, translate_favs).
Editing settings.json
To change a key by hand:
- Quit Snipdeck: right-click the tray icon and choose Exit. Closing the window only hides Snipdeck to the tray. Where there is no tray icon, as on GNOME without the AppIndicator extension, closing the window quits.
- Open
settings.jsonin a text editor (see File locations). - Change a value, keep the file valid JSON, and save.
- Start Snipdeck again. It reads the file once, at startup.
Snipdeck rewrites settings.json whenever you change something from the app, so an edit you make while it is running is overwritten the next time you use the ⋯ menu.
The file does not need every key. A key you leave out uses its default, and keys Snipdeck does not know are ignored.
File locations
| What | Windows | Linux |
|---|---|---|
| Settings | %APPDATA%\Snipdeck\settings.json | ~/.config/Snipdeck/settings.json |
| Gallery database (SQLite with a full-text index, including OCR text) | %LOCALAPPDATA%\Snipdeck\snips.db | ~/.local/share/Snipdeck/snips.db |
| Snip images | %LOCALAPPDATA%\Snipdeck\cache\images\ | ~/.local/share/Snipdeck/cache/images/ |
| Gallery thumbnails | %LOCALAPPDATA%\Snipdeck\cache\thumbs\ | ~/.local/share/Snipdeck/cache/thumbs/ |
| Default folder for Save | Pictures\Snipdeck\ | Snipdeck in your Pictures folder |
On Linux, $XDG_CONFIG_HOME and $XDG_DATA_HOME take the place of ~/.config and ~/.local/share when they are set. On Windows, paste %APPDATA% or %LOCALAPPDATA% into the File Explorer address bar to jump there.
Snips are stored as lossless WebP. A snip wider or taller than WebP allows (16383 pixels), such as a capture across several monitors or a large collage, is stored as PNG. Snips saved as PNG by an older version are converted to WebP in the background the first time a newer version starts; the gallery stays usable meanwhile.
settings.json keys
| Key | Default | Meaning |
|---|---|---|
language | "auto" | Interface language. "auto" follows your system; otherwise a code such as "en", "tr" or "zh-CN". See Languages. |
dark_theme | true | true for the dark theme, false for the light one. |
floating_in_taskbar | false | true gives floating snips their own taskbar entries. |
thumb_size_index | 1 | Gallery card size: 0 small, 1 medium, 2 large. |
upload_service | "catbox" | Image host for uploads: "catbox", "imgur", or "custom:<name>" for a host in upload_hosts. An unknown value, or a custom host no longer in the list, falls back to catbox. |
upload_hosts | [] | Hosts imported from ShareX .sxcu files, stored with ShareX’s own field names. |
imgur_client_id | "" | Your Imgur Client-ID. Needed only when upload_service is "imgur". |
translate_target | "en" | Target language for OCR + Translate. Updated when you pick a language in the popup. |
translate_favs | ["en","es","fr","de","it","pt","ru","ar"] | Quick-pick languages in the translate popup. Never empty: an empty list is reset to this default. |
translate_consented | false | Becomes true once you agree that OCR + Translate may send the recognized text to Google Translate. Set it back to false to be asked again. |
default_format | "png" | Extension added in the Save dialog when you type a name without one, such as "png", "jpg" or "bmp". |
save_dir | Pictures/Snipdeck | Folder the Save dialog opens in. |
border_color_active | [255, 138, 61] | RGB color of the border around the selected floating snip. |
Values are case-sensitive. Language codes are written with a hyphen: zh-CN, not zh_cn.
Older versions had keys that no longer exist, such as include_border_on_save or selection_tint. If they are still in your file, Snipdeck ignores them.
Global hotkeys
The global hotkeys are stored as strings such as "CtrlAltShift+A":
| Key | Default | Action |
|---|---|---|
hotkey_snip | "CtrlAltShift+A" | New snip |
hotkey_snip_clip | "CtrlAltShift+C" | New snip and copy it to the clipboard |
hotkey_clip_only | "CtrlAltShift+X" | Clipboard only, not added to the gallery |
hotkey_gallery | "CtrlAltShift+G" | Open the gallery |
hotkey_toggle_visibility | "WinAlt+H" | Show or hide all floating snips |
The defaults use Ctrl+Alt+Shift because Ctrl+Shift+C is copy in terminals and Ctrl+Shift+A and G are taken in browsers. If your file still holds the old Ctrl+Shift defaults, Snipdeck moves them to the new ones; a combination you chose yourself is left alone.
On Windows and on a Linux X11 session these keys decide the hotkeys. On Wayland the desktop owns global shortcuts: Snipdeck proposes these combinations the first time it starts, your desktop asks you to approve them, and after that you change them in your desktop’s keyboard settings, not here.
Launch at login
Launch at Login, in the ⋯ menu and in the tray menu, writes an ordinary startup entry rather than a setting:
| Platform | Entry |
|---|---|
| Windows | A Snipdeck.lnk shortcut in the Startup folder (shell:Startup); no registry Run key |
| Linux | An XDG autostart entry, ~/.config/autostart/com.revisetouch.Snipdeck.desktop |
Both start Snipdeck with --autostart, so it comes up hidden in the tray instead of opening the gallery. If you move the program, Snipdeck rewrites the entry for its new location the next time you start it by hand.
Example settings.json
A file that uses the light theme, the Turkish interface and an imported upload host could look like this. The host is a placeholder; yours comes from your server’s .sxcu file through ⋯ → Upload to → Add from a .sxcu file….
