Is Snipdeck free and open source?
Yes. Snipdeck is free and open source under the MIT license, made by ReviseTouch. The source is at github.com/ReviseTouch/snipdeck; you can read it, build it yourself, and use it for anything the MIT license allows.
Which platforms does it run on?
| Platform | Status |
|---|---|
| Windows 10 and 11 (x64) | Everything. A single portable .exe, no installer. |
| Linux on GNOME (x64) | With the bundled GNOME Shell extension: Super+Alt+drag capture, snips placed where you captured them and kept on top, OCR, the color picker. |
| Linux, other desktops (x64) | Capture from the hotkeys and the toolbar, OCR, the color picker. No modifier+drag gesture; on Wayland, snips are not placed where captured or kept on top. |
| macOS | Not yet. |
See Installation for how to install on each, and Troubleshooting for why some things differ on Linux.
Does it work offline?
Mostly, yes. The parts you use most never touch the network:
| Feature | Needs the network? |
|---|---|
| Capture, including freeze-first | No |
| OCR (indexing and OCR + Clipboard) | No |
| The gallery and search | No |
| OCR + Translate | Yes |
| Upload to an image host | Yes |
OCR uses Windows.Media.Ocr on Windows and tesseract on Linux, both on your machine. Only OCR + Translate and uploads use the network, and both ask first.
Where are my snips stored?
In your user folders:
| What | Windows | Linux |
|---|---|---|
| Gallery database and images | %LOCALAPPDATA%\Snipdeck\ (snips.db and cache\) | ~/.local/share/Snipdeck/ (snips.db and cache/) |
| Settings | %APPDATA%\Snipdeck\settings.json | ~/.config/Snipdeck/settings.json |
| Default folder for Save | Pictures\Snipdeck\ | Snipdeck in your Pictures folder |
Snips are kept as lossless WebP. See Settings for every file and key.
Is any of my data sent anywhere?
Not unless you use one of two features, and both ask first:
- OCR + Translate sends only the recognized text of a snip to Google Translate. It asks the first time you use it.
- Upload sends the image to an image host, only after you press Upload in a window that names the host and says what the upload means.
Can I upload to my own server?
Yes. If your image server offers a ShareX custom uploader file (.sxcu), as Zipline, XBackBone and Chevereto do, choose ⋯ → Upload to → Add from a .sxcu file… and pick it. Snipdeck checks the file when you add it and tells you if it needs something Snipdeck does not support. See Sharing and export.
Is there a settings window?
Not yet. What you change often is in the gallery’s ⋯ menu: floating snips in the taskbar, dark theme, launch at login, language and the upload host. The rest is in settings.json; see Settings.
How do I change the language?
Snipdeck comes in 23 languages and picks yours from the system on first launch. To change it, open ⋯ → Language in the gallery toolbar. See Languages.
How do I make a collage?
Click Collage in the gallery toolbar. The collage editor has its own picker for choosing snips; pick a layout (grid, justified rows or masonry) and save. The result is a new snip; the originals stay as they were.
How do I remove Snipdeck?
On Windows, Snipdeck is a single portable .exe with no installer:
- Quit it from the tray (Exit).
- Delete the
.exe(snipdeck-windows-x64.exefrom a release,target\release\snipdeck.exefrom a source build). - If Launch at Login was on, delete the
Snipdeckshortcut from yourshell:Startupfolder, or turn the option off before step 1. Snipdeck never writes a registryRunkey. - If you want your snips and settings gone too, delete the folders listed in Where are my snips stored?.
On Linux, run the installer again from the folder you installed from:
./install.sh --uninstallIt removes the program, its menu entry, its icon, the launch-at-login entry and the GNOME extension. Your snips stay in ~/.local/share/Snipdeck and your settings in ~/.config/Snipdeck; delete those folders if you want them gone. Log out and back in to unload the GNOME extension.
